Wordpress And Music

One of the many unexpected ways in which the Internet has changed our lives is in our personal music expression. The availability of what we can hear is no longer determined by a handful of music industry executives who may or may not share our tastes. Music—the way it’s produced, the way it’s sold, and the way it’s heard—is changing, and music fans are the beneficiaries.

These days, how many of us hear a song in heavy rotation on the radio, then head to the record store to plunk down $17.99 for the CD featuring that song (along with a fair number of other songs we may or may not want to listen to)? We’re actually likely to hear something for the first time digitally, perhaps through a link referred to us by a friend with similar tastes or in a YouTube video that everyone seems to be talking about. Maybe we stop with regularity at a site like GarageBand.com or peruse a CSS gallery to hear the latest independent music and compare our opinions of it with others. The music industry is rapidly becoming a wide-open democracy.

This has been a boon to musicians. Now, rather than wait and hope and pray for a record deal, a band can produce and distribute its music on its own. When just starting out, they might upload to a site like Indie-music.com, hoping to attract fans. As buzz grows, they might develop their own site, allowing fans to discover more of their work. The best part is that this all can be accomplished with little capital investment. Posting on YouTube or independent music sites is often free, and even software for developing and improving a website, like WordPress, is available as a free download. Then when something really takes off, band members may well find the record companies contacting them!

Even a decade ago, who could have guessed that a huge band like Radiohead would allow fans to pay whatever they chose for downloading an album, or that a dowdy Scottish spinster like Susan Boyle would reach millions with her voice? Across the music spectrum, the Internet has enabled us to find, share, and enjoy songs and artists specific to our tastes like never before.
