Fight Aging With a Pilates Class

Many people would love to find a cure for an aging body. Little do most people know that the key to halting the body’s natural aging process is to keep it strong and healthy. One of the best ways to fight aging is with a pilates class. Pilates is a fantastic way to keep your body looking and feeling young.

By taking a pilates class you will be doing a lot more than just exercising your muscles; you will be building a strong and powerful core – one of the key things that will keep you energetic and youthful. One of the first things that happens as the body ages is that the core muscles weaken; this causes the body to stoop. When the body stoops it immediately throws many other muscles and internal organs out of alignment and puts stress on ligaments and joints. The stress automatically makes the body look and feel old.

Pilates class helps to fight aging by keeping those crucial core muscles strong and healthy. As long as those muscles are being exercised and used they will retain their strength, elasticity and stability. When you have a strong core your body will stand tall on its own and you will have far less pressure placed on your joints and ligaments, which in turn will help you to retain your youthful stance and strength.

Although you may not be able to fight aging completely, you can definitely slow it down tremendously by enrolling in a pilates class. By easing your stress, improving your balance and posture and strengthening your core you will definitely be able stave off the effects of aging – leaving you looking and feeling young, healthy and vigorous for years to come.

So, if you were looking for a miracle cure to fight an aging body – look no further. All you have to do is sign up for a pilates class and watch the years melt away!

Texans Find Qigong as a Response to the Obesity Epidemic

It wasn't long ago that workout programs were limited to variations on the basics: jogging, hiking, team sports, like basketball or soccer, and, if one was lucky enough to have a home or fitness club swimming pool, a few good laps. Even exercise machines tended to only simulate the same activities. Treadmills, stair climbers, stationary bikes, and elliptical trainers were a bit like the hamster-wheel version of trying to enjoy the great outdoors, indoors.

The emphasis was on discipline, and going as long and as hard as a thumping heart would allow. Pushing to utter exhaustion and stumbling out with sweat-soaked clothes were good signs. But times, they are a'changin', and, with a ballooning obesity epidemic on the nation's hands, contributing, in part, to a growing health insurance crisis, this can only mean good things to come. Texas' obesity rate alone is 27%, 3 percentage points higher than the national average.

This is not to say that a hard, sweaty workout doesn't have its place. Particularly for the young and joint-healthy, strenuous exercise sessions can show incredible benefits. But, in the past fifteen years, new methods of research have demonstrated that increased endurance and decreased risk of certain diseases such as atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and diabetes and improved muscle strength, loss of fat content, lower stress levels, and better overall health can be achieved through practices like qigong, interval training, yoga, and physically-based, interactive video games, such as Dance Dance Revolution.

Texas, too, is realizing this need for varied exercise options, and cities like Dallas and Austin nourish thriving yoga studios, pilates classes, and martial arts academies.

These may all seem like familiar options to the young-adult Texas crowd, but, a little more than a decade ago, qigong master Chunyi Lin couldn't attract a half dozen students. Now, he runs his own center in Minnesota, travels across the country conducting workshops, and teaches packed classes of sixty or more at a time. Qigong [has been] growing like crazy in the United States in the past few years. People want to be more proactive with their health care.

Americans are turning less and less to their individual health insurance companies to hand them laboratory prescriptions, and more and more to taking control of their own health through preventative care, including stress-reduction techniques.

In addition to cardiovascular fitness, the ever-increasing health-conscious population is seeking longevity, reduced stress, and overall mental and physical improvements. Let's face it: Americans are stressed out. Folks in Texas, and the rest of the nation's populace, are starting to realize that stress alone is causing a good portion of one's mental and physical issues.

Qigong, a broad term for several types of energy-based practices, is growing as at least a partial solution to this problem. Through the use of slow, measured movements and deep breathing, this ancient Chinese physical art has shown evidence of reducing pain and inflammation, increasing focus and concentration, improving immunity, lowering stress levels, and providing for better overall well-being. Yoga, an even more popular practice, offers a range of workouts from sweat-inducing, muscle-cramping regimens, to measured, deep-breathing sessions suitable for all ages.

Interval training is also hitting the market again. After a brief stint of popularity in the 90's, the exercise program seemed to fade, kept alive by cloistered professional athletes and specialized fitness chains, like Curves. Interval training alternates between short bursts of high-intensity activity, and slower, lower-energy stints. After short sessions of interval bike training spread over two weeks, a 2005 double-blind study found that 75% of its subjects increased their endurance by 100%.

Another study this year found that, after two weeks of similar training (which entailed seven interval workouts), the practice improved the cardio function of its participants by 13% and their ability to burn fat by 36%. The results were similar for all fitness levels - from the borderline sedentary to the dedicated athletes - according to Talanian, lead author of the study and exercise scientist at Ontario's University of Guelph. That means almost anyone can do it and should expect to experience tangible results within weeks.

Interval training seems to work so well, in part, because high-intensity bursts recruit new muscle fibers, while low-intensity periods allow those muscles to rid themselves of waste products created during the workout. Contrary to popular beliefs as of a decade ago, this method actually increases endurance by a greater percentage than steady-paced, high-intensity exercise sessions. Such relatively quick, tangible results, for most exercisers, keeps them working out.

Consistent workouts not only mean feeling and looking better, but also increased immune function, which, in the long run, translates to fewer incidences of disease. Exercisers aren't the only ones who love it; health insurance companies do, too.

"Any form of exercise that recruits new muscle fibers is going to enhance the body's ability to metabolize carbohydrates and fat," said Ed Coyle, director of the human performance laboratory at the University of Texas, Austin.

The only real guidelines? Higher-energy bursts should elevate heart rate to 80 to 85% of optimal performance, and the lower-energy periods should never last long enough to decrease heart rate to resting levels. Interval trainers should always warm up first, take 24- hours between sessions to give the body time to recover, and never attempt the program if over the age of 60, or at risk for heart attack, stroke, or other cardiovascular ailments without the consent of a qualified physician.

Technological trends cannot be ignored, either. As usual, children are leading the way. Dance Dance Revolution, an interactive Japanese video game that hit the Asian market about ten years ago, is now recognized as such a popular, effective, and entertaining workout, that more than 1,500 American schools are expected to integrate it into their curriculum by 2010, in the face of a growing obesity epidemic.

Recent studies in Houston and Dallas revealed alarming obesity trends in children under 18, and Texas schools are now considering revamping their physical education programs in response. Dance Dance Revolution may be an intelligent option: utilizing a foot touch pad and on-screen cues, participants learn increasingly complicated, progressively fast-paced dance moves. The game can be played individually, or in competition, which appeals to a broader audience. One need not be particularly athletic, nor competitive, to participate; the only requirement being the willingness and ability to move on cue.

"I'll tell you one thing: they don't run in here like that for basketball," said Bill Hines, a physical education teacher in Morgantown, West Virginia, where the game was integrated.

So maybe workouts don't have to be so much work. Through variety and open-mindedness, anything that gets a body moving, a heart rate up, or stress levels down, is worth a shot. And, it can even be a rewarding cultural experience. Qigong, martial arts like aikido and jujitsu, and ashtanga yoga classes can elevate more than just fitness awareness levels. Who knows, you may even get a discount on that health insurance premium over time. And don't worry, pronunciation guides usually come with the class.

How you treat your body when you're young will certainly affect your health as you age, and eventually your wallet.

Tired of Your Normal Workout? Take a Gym Class!

How many times do we make excuses for not going to the gym? “I’m too tired.” “I don’t have time.” “I get bored doing the same thing over and over again.” One solution to adding variety to an exercise routine is joining the classes offered by the gym. Studies have shown that women who add exercise classes to their daily routine feel and look better.

When you are looking for a class to join at the gym, look for a class that is suitable to your needs. Many gyms offer daily classes to their members. The classes at the gym are a great way to add variety to your training routine. Many gyms have classes for your cardio and weight training. If you are pressed for time, many classes combine the cardio and weight training to give you a total body workout. Many local gym’s websites have a schedule of the classes they offer and a description of the class. Most classes last an hour and are offered at different time of the day and multiple times a week.

Classes usually include: Aerobics and kickboxing, spinning/cycling, abs and stretching, and yoga and Pilates. Aerobics classes include water aerobics, step aerobics, and dance aerobics. These classes are a good alternative to using the treadmill and elliptical machines. They are group motivated, and are a good choice if you are bored running on the treadmill. You can burn just at much, if not more, calories when you do these classes versus only using the machines. Spinning and cycling classes are a good non-impact class; it easy on the joints. Abs and stretching are classes that increase your core. These classes are a good fit for people who want to break the monotony of doing sets of sit-ups and crunches lying on the floor. Yoga and Pilates classes are good choices for building lean muscle. These classes use isometric resistance to build the lean muscle. Yoga class’s main focus is centering and flexibility. They also focus on improving and strengthening your core.

Don’t feel awkward as a beginner. The first day you may not be able to do everything like the instructor does. As long as you keep moving, that is all that matters. The instructors are all very well trained and can answer any of the questions you may have. If it is your first time in a class and you see the other members are bringing out equipment, just ask the instructor what equipment you need. Give the class one time before you decide it is not for you. One of the benefits of participating in these classes is meeting new people. You may be able do an exercise DVD at home, but being with a group of people who also want to improve their overall health can give you the energy you need to take it to the next level and work harder.

Just as gym classes shouldn’t be forgotten, neither should your nutrition. Adding protein to your diet is a great way to help build lean muscle. Whey protein supplements can help you build muscle which will burn more calories and help you lose weight. Women often have a problem getting sufficient protein in their diet, so whey protein is an easy way to add protein without additional fats or carbohydrates. The best type of whey protein to use is a whey protein isolate because it is the purest form of whey protein.

To break the cycle of walking to the elliptical machine and putting in your normal routine, try taking a gym class. They often provide a better workout than using a cardio machine, plus gyms usually offer them free to their members. Check with your local gym and take advantage of what they are offering.

Top Tips For Creating Everyday Balance

Leading a balanced, healthy life means eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep, enough relaxation time and enough exercise. Studies have shown that stress is quite literally a killer - so here are some suggestions to help you incorporate a little peace into your daily routine.

Develop a daily yoga practice

This is not only an effective, but also a cost-effective way to improve your health and reduce stress. If you haven't done yoga before, find a good class to attend at least once a week. You should be paying around $10 - $20 for this.

Create a space at home in which you can burn some relaxing or revitalising essential oils (lavender is my favourite) and do some yoga poses each morning. A yoga mat is great but not essential, so all you really need is yourself and some comfortable clothes to move around in.

My favourite new website is My Yoga Online. For under $15 a month you have unlimited access to hundreds and hundreds of yoga and pilates classes. If you've been doing yoga for a while you could ditch the classes and just do this to save yourself a few dollars. I love it (even if my partner finds it hilarious to tease me while I'm striking poses in our teeny weeny lounge room)!

Or, treat yourself to The Yoga Deck. This fantastic set of cards has a range of breathing, meditation, stretching and full yoga poses for you to try. The beauty of it is that you can do one or two of the cards for a short session, or twenty of them to keep you busy for an hour or more.

Learn to belly breathe

Lately I've been learning to breathe. Yep, sounds pretty basic doesn't it? However, I found that I hardly ever exhaled fully and without realising it I was shortening my breath whenever I felt under pressure. This in turn causes stress and anxiety levels to rise. So when you're feeling stressed, try this great little exercise:

* exhale completely, really pushing the breath out, starting at your tummy and ending by emptying your lungs. You should see your tummy going in as you exhale.

* breathe in for a slow count of four, starting from your belly (you should see your belly move outwards) and ending by filling your lungs.

* breathe out for a slow count of eight, emptying from your belly right up through your lungs.

* Repeat at least five times.

This exercise has the power to dramatically calm me down and the best bit is - you can do it any time, any where and nobody has to know!

Ditch the caffeine

Seriously. You don't need it. I promise. Caffeine raises your heart rate temporarily which can make you feel jittery and will only make you more stressed. If you are tired, you are tired and guzzling caffeine can't make you function more effectively. Try getting some sleep instead! Oh and substitute it with decaffeinated green tea - which has amazing anti-cancer properties.

Make a big deal out of bedtime

If you have trouble sleeping, try making a fuss about bedtime. No, I don't mean in the manner of a seven-year-old... I mean, have a warm bath - try Be Genki's wonderful Tranquility Bath and Shower Oil. Make yourself a cup of warm milk and honey and turn off the TV. TV is stimulating and can lead to an over-stimulated brain at bed time, so try reading a book instead for an hour before bed. Burn some relaxing essential oils while you're at it. You'll drift off into a peaceful and restful sleep feeling totally pampered.

Try incorporating these simple actions into your week at least some of the time and notice the difference.

Finding The Best Discount Cruise Vacation Package

Even people who have never set foot aboard a cruise ship dream of being able to sail away for at least a few days on a relaxing cruise vacation. And, it's probably safe to say that most of these same people also dream about finding an amazing deal on cruise vacation packages that would make it possible for them to book that cruise. In this article there are several tips that can help you to find the best cruise deals on the market, so you can take your next vacation aboard ship.

Finding deals comes down to a combination of having a good strategy, being in the right place at the right time, and being able to take swift and decisive action to book hot deals when you find them. It is the principle of supply and demand that still rules when it comes to the rates. If the cruise lines have more ships out on the water than they are able to easily fill, then discount cruise travel deals start to appear. If they are enjoying quick bookings and people clamoring to get aboard, then the travel deals disappear and the prices start to climb.

Any time one of the cruise lines builds a new ship and puts it into service, they have a sudden increase in their passenger capacity, especially if the new ship is a "megaliner." This is a time when the cruise companies will offer special cruise deals to introduce people to the new vessel and to hopefully sell all accommodations. Additionally, the other companies will often lower their rates in order to stay competitive.

One of the best ways to enjoy hot deals on cruises is to be as flexible as possible with the category of ship and the type of cabin you are willing to book. It is also a good idea to book your cruise at least 90 days ahead of the departure date. For the best discount cruise travel deals, it is advisable to book four to six months ahead because the rates are generally lower when the ship is far from full capacity. However, if you can be super-flexible about when you can leave, then you might be able to find super hot deals on last minute travel.

When you are considering the available deals, be sure to remember that the rates for cruises include all your meals aboard ship, your on-ship entertainment, and most of the onboard activities such as movies, live shows, gym usage, games and sports, and dance classes. Some people are more than satisfied with all of the food, fun and activities that are included in the "all inclusive" price.

Whether you find cruise deals or pay full price, there are some additional costs that you should be aware of during your time on the floating hotel. For instance, you will be expected to tip the service staff which comes to about $10 per day in most cases. You will need to pay for beverages too, and this includes soda, bottled water and alcohol. As well, for special things like spa services, yoga or pilates classes, and shore excursions, there is an additional charge.

Pilates Job Outlook Looks Strong Despite Economy

With U.S. unemployment numbers worsening by the week, there are positive signs that say Pilates jobs may be more secure than average occupations. According to the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL), the fitness industry is expected to grow 27 percent by 2016, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. And a recent fitness industry compensation survey by the IDEA Health & Fitness Association reinforced that finding.

The survey, which included responses from 501 IDEA members working in a variety of positions in health club settings, found that wages for all positions except fitness floor staff are higher than the national average, and all positions reported wages higher than they were two years ago.

Pilates and yoga instructors, specifically, reported receiving an average hourly wage of $33.25, the highest of all types of instructors. This is up from $29.50 in 2006, indicating that wages have kept up with inflation.

What accounts for these positive projections when most industries are dealing with breathtaking downturns? According to the DOL, “an increasing number of people are spending time and money on fitness, and more businesses are recognizing the benefits of health and fitness programs for their employees.” The DOL also credits aging baby boomers, who are concentrating on staying healthy and fit, as well as the reduction of physical education in schools and parents’ concern about childhood obesity. “Participation in yoga and Pilates is expected to continue to increase, driven partly by the aging population that demands low-impact forms of exercise and seeks relief from arthritis and other ailments,” says the DOL.

So, even if your business is experiencing a downturn, the prospects remain good for the future. If you’re looking to draw in new clients, perhaps working to tap into the older and younger members of your community may be a good strategy.

Other findings from the IDEA survey include:

• 60 percent of full-time employees surveyed are covered by liability insurance, and more than 55 percent receive benefits such as health insurance and paid sick time.

• Communication and leadership skills are the two most important factors for promotion (recognized by 100 percent of respondents), whereas job performance is key to receiving a merit raise, according to 88 percent of respondents.

• 58 percent of respondents said their companies pay for continuing education, in the forms of workshops and in-service training.

Pilates - the Power to Heal Your Body

Pilates - the Power to Heal Your Body

Tired of suffering with PAIN, ACHES OR INJURIES ? "PILATES" may be the solution you've been looking for

Millions of people like you are discovering the radical changes that Pilates can bring to your mind and body. So what is Pilates, and why are so many people spending fortunes on Pilates classes?

Healing Motion Pilates is a complete mind and body routine that improves the performance of the human body.

The Pilates principle, created by Joseph Pilates in the 1900s, involves conditioning the entire body by proper alignment, centring, concentration, control, precision, breathing and flowing movements.

Pilates focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep your body balanced. These critical muscles support your spine. When these muscles are weak or misaligned, you'll know about it - as this is where chronic pain often starts.

Economy, Grace and Balance The principle aim of Pilates is to create a fusion of your mind and body, so that your body will learn to move with economy, grace and balance.

Mastering the art of Pilates allows you to tap into your body's ultimate powers - giving you access to your natural strength and vitality. Pilates will connect you to your strengths, counteract your weaknesses, and correct your imbalances.

Mastery of Pilates requires careful practice - you must be mindful of your body as you perform the Pilates movements.

How people benefit from Pilates Joseph Pilates created his new system of movement while treating injured soldiers returning from the battlefields of World War One. The Pilates system was designed to be a versatile solution to a huge variety of conditions and ailments.

What would you change about your life? Pilates can bring huge rewards:

• Pilates improves your mobility and flexibility • Pilates makes you physically stronger, by developing your core muscles • If you suffer with back pain or stiff joints, Pilates gradually lifts away the pain you feel • If you walk or run, but find you've hit a wall and can't improve, try Pilates. By building your core strength and stability, you will soon notice increased speed, endurance and resistance to injury • If you suffer from a disability or are rehabilitating after injury, then the Pilates system will help you recover quickly and effectively - reducing the likelihood of recurrences or relapses • If you, like me, enjoy sports and are looking for more power, speed or agility, you'll love how Pilates can raise your game. Pilates is my secret weapon on the tennis court! • Pilates also teaches you perfect posture, helping you to stand tall and proud

Learning Pilates So, does Pilates sound like something you would like to try? Pilates is not a miracle cure. It's a system for moving and for living. To really benefit from the art of Pilates, you must give it time. Try searching online for Pilates classes near you, or consider learning by DVD.

Courses and classes are great if you have the time and like working with other people, not everyone has the time or the money to learn in this way. For me there are so many other things that I like to do, so I have found a set of DVDs that take you from Beginner, through Intermediate to Advanced level enabling anyone to learn this great art. The Alexander Technique and the Pilates Method Today

Anyone familiar with the original writings of Joseph Pilates and F. Matthias Alexander will be struck by the parallels between their analyses of why the physical functioning of most adults has become compromised. Both men began their investigations as a result of serious personal challenges. Both men were in part inspired by their keen observations of the way animals moved. Both placed a tremendous emphasis on movement quality and both were aware of the close link between mind and body. Both developed specific systems designed to help others improve their physical functioning. Both men lived into their mid-eighties and were actively teaching their methods until shortly before their deaths.

The parallels go on and on. Of course there are some significant differences.

What can we say about about the Pilates Method and the Alexander Technique as they are practiced today?

The first thing to take into account is that the terms “Pilates Method” and “Alexander Technique” are not trademarked. This means that ANYBODY can call him or herself a Pilates Instructor or Alexander Technique teacher.

The same is true of course in many other fields - you do not need any formal certification to call yourself a piano teacher, a gymnastics instructor, a meditation teacher or a fitness trainer, to cite a few common examples. In all these fields, the responsibility falls upon the client or student to evaluate the credentials and reputation of the teacher.

As in other fields, there are professional organizations that certify Pilates Instructors and Alexander Technique teachers. In the case of the Alexander Technique, there are a relatively small number of such organizations and many are interconnected, recognizing each other’s members. They generally include teachers who trained in the different variations of the Technique that emerged after Alexander’s death in 1955. These organizations - known generally as professional societies - are usually national in scope although some have members in many different countries.

Alexander professional societies usually oversee one or more training courses for Alexander Teachers; anyone who graduates from an approved course is automatically eligible for membership. At present, there are in the neighborhood of 60 training courses worldwide. In general, training to become a teacher of the Alexander Technique takes three years, following the pattern Alexander established when he first started training teachers in 1931. Many professional societies have codes of ethics and good practice which their members are required to follow.

With Pilates Instructor training, the situation is quite different. I think Lynee Robinson and Helge Fisher put it best in their book “The Mind Body Workout With Pilates and the Alexander Technique”: “Unlike Alexander...Joseph Pilates never took the initiative of setting up an official training programme with the result that many of his disciples went on to teach their own versions of Pilates Method. The definition of what was, or is, true Pilates is somewhat blurred and, indeed, is still be debated today.”

I believe this “blurring” is quite a bit more apparent with Pilates instruction today than is the case with the Alexander technique. A number of individuals have established their own versions of the Pilates Method and their own certification requirements. These requirements vary widely and, in general, require a much shorter period of training than is the case for Alexander Technique teachers. Generally it’s only a few months or less. The surge in demand for Pilates classes in recent years seems to have outstripped the pool of people qualified to teach them, leading to worries about safety. A recent Wall Street Journal article titled “Is Your Pilates Instructor a Health Hazard?” addresses this question in some detail.

Clearly if you decide to take either Pilates Method classes or Alexander Technique lessons or classes, you are well advised to do some research and investigation first. Some very good advice for choosing an Alexander Technique teacher has been provided by Barbara and Bill Conable in their book “How to Learn the Alexander Technique, A Manual for Students”. An edited version of their advice can be found at:
http://www.alexandertechnique.com/choose

If you decide to take Pilates classes I would suggest paying a lot of attention to the nature of the instruction. The exercises should be done very slowly and carefully at first, with an emphasis on educating you about the body mechanics involved. I’d be very wary of about classes that seem more aerobic in nature. Finally, you should be able to see some concrete results in just a few sessions.

The Pilates and Alexander Homepage at http://pilatesandalexander.com explores the relationships between these two fields.
